Our History

1992

Fondation of HWB

Hospital Without Borders (HWB) was founded in 1992 by Claude Simon, with the support of the Rotary Club of Namur-Confluent, driven by the conviction that the important equipment regularly renewed by Belgian hospitals can have a second life where resources are scarce or even nonexistent.

1995

HWB Recognition

HWB exclusively focuses on developing countries and is recognized by international bodies such as the Red Cross, the United Nations, the European Union, and the King Baudouin Foundation in Belgium.

2005

Rotary’s Involvement

The involvement of all Belgian-Luxembourg Rotary districts in the board and in the management of the NGO is formalized in the statutes. HWB is managed by a team of volunteer Rotarians, supported by a permanent structure.

2016

Relocation of HWB in Champion (Namur)

Relocation of all HWB activities to a single newly acquired 6,300 m² facility in Champion (Namur). This location is a former military site.

2024

HWB Today

In more than 30 years, HWB has realized over 1500 humanitarian projects with a long-term, sustainable approach. The NGO primarily equips healthcare centers in Africa and Asia. HWB also responds urgently to natural disasters and conflicts.
