Our Emergency Fund

Hospital Without Frontiers (HWF) Emergency Fund has been established with the aim to quickly and efficiently react to the medical devices’ needs.

Medical supplies delivered in days, not months. Today for Lebanon, tomorrow for the next crisis.

In an emergency, speed is what makes the difference between life and death.

Right now in Lebanon, more than a million people have been forced to flee their homes. Some health centres have closed; others are overwhelmed. Hospital Without Frontiers is already taking action: we prepare and donate medical supplies where they are desperately needed.

Sadly, a crisis gives no warning before it strikes. So that we can respond quickly and effectively, in Lebanon and beyond, we are launching an Emergency Fund: a reserve that allows us to step in immediately to meet the need for medical supplies on the ground.

Your donation doesn’t vanish into thin air. It funds the collection, refurbishment, storage and administrative handling of donated equipment (hospital beds, wheelchairs, surgical kits and more), all the way to the end of the chain.

In Lebanon, more than a million people have been forced to flee their homes, and health centres have closed. HWB is already taking action. So that we can respond just as quickly next time, we are building a reserve that can be mobilised within days.

Our Emergency Missions Over the Years

Emergency Aid in Lebanon

2025 – 2026

As violence escalated between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanese civilians have paid a heavy price. Strikes hitting hospitals, schools and civilian infrastructure have caused many casualties.

To support medical teams and help rehabilitate the affected facilities, HWF has delivered first-aid supplies and plans a further shipment of hospital equipment in the coming weeks.

Supporting Hospitals in North Kivu (DRC)

2024 – 2026

Since 2022, the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been ravaged by violent conflict between armed groups and government forces. Local health facilities are overwhelmed: shortages of supplies, water and power cuts, and a surge of patients needing intensive care.

In response to this crisis, HWF regularly delivers medical and hospital equipment to the region’s health centres, particularly in Bukavu, Goma and the worst-affected towns.

Our Support in Ukraine

2022 – 2026

The Russo-Ukrainian conflict, which intensified in 2022 with Russia’s invasion of the country, has caused considerable loss of life, estimated at around 280,000 dead.

Through a partnership with Rotary Belgium, HWF sent three waves of emergency kits to first-aid posts and hospitals near the combat zones in 2022, helping to strengthen their capacity to treat the wounded. Since then, we have continued to send emergency kits as well as medical equipment to support the hospitals receiving the injured.

Fighting Covid-19

2020

Countries of operation: Belgium, India, Italy, Sri Lanka and Turkey

During the Covid-19 health crisis, hospitals around the world were overwhelmed by the influx of patients requiring hospitalisation. Faced with the emergency, HWF stepped in to support several health centres, delivering masks, gloves, protective gear for healthcare workers and oxygen concentrators.

Creating emergency kits and the Nepal earthquake

2015-2016

After a series of earthquakes among the most powerful since 1934, causing major loss of life and widespread destruction, HWF designed and deployed Dispensary Kits to reach isolated areas that were inaccessible even by air. This rapid response brought relief to communities in the most remote mountainous regions. These kits are backpacks containing everything needed to provide first aid to the injured in the field.

Supporting the rehabilitation of Haitian hospitals

2010

In January 2010, Haiti was struck by a devastating magnitude-7 earthquake, one of the deadliest in Caribbean history. The country’s health infrastructure was massively destroyed, leaving people without access to care at a critical moment. HWF responded to the emergency by delivering a large volume of medical and hospital equipment to several health facilities, helping them rebuild and resume their care activities.

FAQ

Where Does my Money Go ?

Your donation funds the chain that makes emergency response possible: collecting, refurbishing and quickly shipping medical supplies wherever a crisis strikes. In practical terms, it allows us to act in days rather than months.

How does tax deductibility work?

In Belgium, donations to approved organisations such as Hospital Without Frontiers qualify for a tax reduction. So by supporting our Emergency Fund, your generosity also entitles you to a tax benefit.

To qualify, three conditions apply:

  • your donations must total at least €40 over the calendar year (cumulative amount);
  • you must provide us with your national register number*, which is essential for issuing your tax certificate;
  • you must be liable for tax in Belgium: the reduction is applied through your tax return.

In practical terms, the reduction is 30% of the amount donated: a gift of €100 actually costs you only €70.

*In accordance with the GDPR, we process your personal data securely and confidentially.
Why a fund rather than a one-off donation?

Because in an emergency, it’s speed that saves lives. An emergency fund means we have the resources ready before a crisis breaks out, allowing us to act in days rather than months.

Without this reserve, every response depends on a collection launched in a hurry: precious time lost, while the needs themselves don’t wait. With the fund, the moment a crisis arises, in Lebanon today, elsewhere tomorrow, we can mobilise and ship medical supplies without delay.

Your donation therefore doesn’t support just one mission: it strengthens our ability to respond to every emergency still to come. It’s support that acts today, and prepares for tomorrow.
